To mark the first anniversary of SMALL AXE, the BFI is hosting a weekend of screenings and panel discussions at the NFT, followed by a Lovers Rock party with music from Dennis Bovell.
SMALL AXE, created by Steve McQueen for BBC One and first broadcast in 2020 is a collection of five films about the experiences of London’s West Indian community from the 1960s through to the mid-80s.
The films are: MANGROVE, LOVERS ROCK, RED WHITE AND BLUE, ALEX WHEATLE and EDUCATION
SMALL AXE was nominated for a record number of 15 BAFTAs, and two of the films MANGROVE and LOVERS ROCK were in the official competition selection for Cannes 2020.
